Your Guide To The Cook Islands Beach Games 2026

If you’re heading to the Cook Islands this January, you’re in luck. The Cook Islands Beach Games are back from 12–17 January 2026, bringing the island’s western shores to life with action-packed sport, island flavours, and laid-back summer vibes. Whether you're a regular visitor or it’s your first trip to Rarotonga, this is one event worth planting your beach chair for.

What Are The Cook Islands Beach Games?

Held right on the golden sands of Nikao Beach, just west of Avarua, the Beach Games are a week-long celebration of sport, community, and Cook Islands culture. Athletes from across the islands (and a few from further afield) come together to compete in beach volleyball, 3x3 basketball, beach football, and a whole lineup of games.

The setting? Palm trees, sea breeze, and the sound of the waves not far from the action. The atmosphere is festive and welcoming, with plenty to see, eat, and enjoy even if you’re just there to watch. It’s a great way to experience local life and island spirit—no need to break a sweat.

When And Where?

- Dates: 12 to 17 January 2026

- Location: Nikao Beach Courts and Edgewater Resort

Check out the full event details at Cook Islands Tourism. They’ll have schedules, maps, and everything you'll need to plan your visit.

Spectator-Friendly Sports

Even if you’re not on the field, the games are designed with spectators in mind. Some crowd favourites include:

  • Beach volleyball
  • Beach handball
  • Beach netball
  • Beach football
  • Beach touch
  • Air Badminton
  • 3x3 Basketball

Most events are held in the open along the beachfront, with shaded viewing areas, casual seating, and locals happy to explain what’s going on if you’re new to the rules.

More Than Just A Game

Alongside the main events, there’s a rolling supply of good food, music, and entertainment. Local vendors set up shop near the area, serving everything from ika mata and poke bowls to tropical fruit smoothies and BBQ. Expect to hear live drumming, catch a cultural performance, or dance under the stars if you hang around past sunset.

It’s a lively scene, but all in true island-time fashion: easy, welcoming, and full of feel-good energy.

Getting Around The Island

To make the most of your stay (and to get to events without relying on set timetables), we recommend grabbing a scooter or car from Polynesian Rental Cars & Bikes. We’ve been around for years and make renting easy, with friendly local service and pick-up points all over Raro.

Nothing beats cruising the coast after the games, windows down or helmet on, looking for your next snorkel spot or roadside fruit stand.

Local Tips For Beach Game Days

  • Arrive early: You'll beat the heat and get a good spot near the action

  • Support local stalls: The kai around the venue is fresh, fast, and full of flavour
  • Stay flexible: Keep an eye on the schedulesome events move with the weather
  • Ask around: Locals love to chat and share tips on the best games to watch (or where to grab dessert after)
